"A treasure in danger"
“Poaching, accidental catch in nets, collisions… the dugongs of New Caledonia are in decline. The latest counts are alarming. If nothing changes in the short term, this emblematic marine mammal will definitely disappear. By calling 16, citizens can report a dead or distressed dugong on the coast or in the shallows. Developed for the WWF, this communication campaign had several objectives:
- Warn people about the risks of extinction
- Promote the phone number 16 as a reporting tool
- Map the geographical areas most at risk - Locally identify threats to reduce them.
The graphic design of this communication campaign illustrates two competing realities: - Emblematic of local biodiversity, the dugongs populate the childhood memories of Caledonians. They are inseparable from the lagoon (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). - A constantly decreasing population: disrupted, wounded or driven out, the 800 or so individuals remaining are threatened.
Launched on December 18, 2017, the campaign was rolled out on several media: billboards, bus shelters, newspapers and social networks. It received wide media coverage.
